Fr. Joseph Sadoc Alemany, while in Italy for a General Chapter, is
appointed Bishop of Monterey. He asks permission to establish a new Dominican province in

Fr. Joseph Sadoc Alemany, Fr. Francis Sadoc Vilarrasa, and Sr. Mary
Catherine Goemaere, a Belgian Dominican sister and two other sisters from Tolouse, who
will eventually form the Dominican congregation of San Rafael, arrive in California. |

Fr. Vincent Jandel, Master of the Order, appoints his former Novice
Master, Fr. Francis Sadoc Vilarrasa, "Commissary General" of California with the
authority of a Prior Provincial to erect houses of the Order. |

Six young Spaniards arrive to enter the newly established novitiate of
St. Dominic at Monterey. |

Archdiocese of San Francisco is erected and Bishop Alemany is named it's
first Archbishop. |

St. Dominic's parish and convent are erected in Benicia, the new state
capital. Mother Goemaere also moves her sisters to Benicia. |

Archbishop Alemany dedicates St. Dominic's Church in San Francisco, which
is raised to a Priory in 1876 with Fr. Pius Murphy as its first prior. |

Archbishop Alemany dies. Fr. Vilarrasa dies and Fr. Vincent Vinyes, one
of the six first novices, succeeds him as Vicar General of California. |

Fr. Pius Murphy becomes the 3rd Vicar General. He extends the Dominican
sphere of influence beyond the Bay Area into the Pacific Northwest. |

The Priory of the Holy Rosary is established in Portland, Oregon. |

Dominicans begin to staff St. Anthony's in Brentwood, CA, until 1925. |

Dominicans accept the challenge of Archbishop John O'Dea to open Blessed
Sacrament parish in the university district of Seattle, Washington. It becomes the 5th
oldest Newman center in the U.S. |

The Dominican Congregation of California is raised to its former status
of Province of the Holy Name of Jesus. Fr. Lawrence Arthur McMahon, son of the Province of
St. Joseph, serves as Prior Provincial. |

St. Mary Magdalen parish is established in Berkeley, California. |

established in Eugene, OR, beginning a new ministry direction for the Province. |
