Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

Personal Stories

It was such a cold winter in 1991. I held my arms tightly to my body as the cold penetrated my bones. As I sat in the church during adoration, I wondered if this was all going to fall apart.

Adoration had started in our parish in 1990 on Holy Thursday. We didn't have the separate adoration chapel we do now. We adored in the church and in order to get the adoration program started, we agreed to have at least three adorers for every hour of adoration. At that time, adoration was not perpetual (that is 24 hours around the clock). Most of our hours were in the evening and with the onset of winter, the evening hours were also the coldest. It was too expensive to have the heat going in the church during those hours. I was heading up the program and the cold was becoming a worrisome factor concerning the continuation of the program.

This particular evening, as I sat in the church during my adoration hour, I turned to the Lord. I prayed, "Lord, I desperately want adoration to continue, but I will lose people if this cold persists. Please can you give us some heat"? I sat there, closed my eyes, waited and wondered. It was then that the church door opened and one of our priests came walking up the aisle. He passed by me, stopped and turned back. Approaching me he said, "Kathy, it's cold in here. Would you like me to turn on the heat?" I smiled, nodded my head and praised God. He'd answered my prayer and most importantly, God gave me a sign that He also wanted adoration to continue. We had heat for a period of days after that, but eventually it had to be turned off again. Due to some other things that occurred later relating to a lack of heat, we did stand a good chance of losing the privilege of adoration, but what it eventually did in the long run was to bring people closer in banding together to keep the program going. They realized how much the program meant to them also. What a blessing it has been! I have learned many spiritual things since that time and I know that I have grown closer to Him because of adoration.

I have a story of God's grace working through my experience of adoration.  Adoration helps me in my prayer life.  This new chapel has changed my life in many ways.  I always look forward to spending time with my best friend-Jesus, in his special home.  At times I don't want to leave, because I find such peace being with him.  He listens to me, no matter what I say or not say.  He always comes to save the day in his own special way.   I know I love him and he loves me and that's why I will continue to go to him.   I have developed a personal relationship with Jesus because we are in his home and he works with me exclusively on a one to one basis which is indeed the best setup for learning.  You see, Jesus is my best teacher and I want to be a good learner.   When the student is ready, the teacher will appear, and so I want to be near him so I won't have as much fear.  For I can do things through Christ who strengthens me.   So, I  will conclude by saying that I go to Jesus for his love, hope and faith in me and for the whole world.  Thank you Jesus and thanks to St. Dominic's Perpetual Adoration Chapel.
