True lights of the World
|
“Champions of the faith”
and “the true lights of the world”: so the first Dominicans were described by Pope Honorius
III when he established the Order of Preachers in 1216. St. Dominic de Guzman, founder of the
new Order, committed his men to the task of preaching the Gospel. His Order was to dedicate
itself exclusively to the four pillars of Dominican Life:
Study,
Prayer, Community,
&
Ministry.

For the last 155 years,
Friars of the Western Province have continued St. Dominic's legacy of uplifting and
challenging our contemporaries by sharing the Gospel message. Today we are faced with new
challenges. At St. Albert’s in Oakland, the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology in
Berkeley, and a variety of Dominican parishes, campuses and ministries, religious life is
flourishing—a vibrant expression of consecrated love embracing the world in need. Our
exhilarating task is to continue lighting the way and sharing the brightness of our faith in
the future.
