Dominican Seminary Celebrate First Graduation in New Facilities
On May 18th the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology (DSPT) celebrated the
accomplishments of lay and religious graduates with a Baccalaureate Mass at 11am. At 4pm Ray
Flynn, former Mayor of Boston and U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican, gave the commencement address.
Of those graduating, four Dominican friars earned both a Master of Divinity and a Master of Arts
(Theology).
Four Dominicans Ordained to the Priesthood
On June 2nd four young men were ordained to the priesthood. The Most Reverend
Bishop Vigneron ordained friars Jerome Cudden, Michael Hurley, Vincent Kelber and John Mellein.
After celebrations with family and friends they will begin ministries at the Newman Center in
Tucson and our parishes in San Francisco and Anchorage. The four comprise the largest ordination
class for the Dominican province in many years.
Rosary Center Announces $250,000 Gift Honoring
Father Duffner
Fr. Paul Duffner, who directed the work of the Rosary Center in Portland, OR, for many years,
recently celebrated his 92nd birthday. To honor him and the many friends he has made
over decades of service to Our Blessed Mother the Rosary Center has made a quarter-million dollar
gift to the Lighting The Way Campaign. Asked what he thought of the gift, Fr. Duffner smiled and
said,” We have prayed to have our own school building for years; this one came along and God
enabled us to buy it. I believe our friends will be proud to be a part of this new chapter in
Dominican history.”
Dominicans Name New Campaign Leadership
The Western Dominican Province recently elected new leadership. Father Nathan Castle has
been appointed Development Director. He helped lead a successful $6.4 million campaign to build a
new chapel at All Saints Catholic Newman Center at Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ. His
assistant is Peter Lewandowski, a 2005 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Dominican Parishes and Newman Centers
are Lighting
the Way
Members of three communities served by Dominicans have responded to appeals to help with
the purchase and renovation of the new seminary. In November the St. Thomas More Newman Center
community at the University of Oregon in Eugene contributed $57,000 to this effort. In March the
St. Mary Magdalen parish community in Berkeley,CA contributed the same amount!
