Mission Statement
The Western Dominican
Province is part of the international Order of Friars
Preachers called by the Catholic Church to the work of
evangelization in the Western United States.
For over 150 years we have
recruited, educated, and provided spiritual formation for
young men wishing to join us in the work of preaching the
Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. During their eight
years of religious training and development, our candidates
reside at St. Albert Priory in Oakland for their spiritual
formation and attend our Dominican School of Philosophy and
Theology, a member of the Graduate Theological Union (GTU),
for their academic and intellectual formation.
Upon ordination, the friars
serve in our university ministry centers, parishes, and our
missions in Kenya and Mexico. Some of our friars are also
involved in other specialized ministries, such as media and
film, iconography, HIV-AIDS outreach, university teaching,
and itinerant preaching, formation of the laity, spiritual
direction and retreat work.
Our distinctive Dominican
way of life—our liturgical prayer, simplicity of life,
contemplative study, and democratic government—sustain and
promote our ministries with a special concern for issues of
faith, justice, and peace.
