Fr. Illtud Evans, OP
Illtud Evans was born on July 16, 1913. He was educated in Wales and at Lampeter
Theological College. After reception into the Catholic Church and a short experience
of journalism, he joined the Order in 1937. He did his theological studies at
Blackfriars, Oxford and was ordained on September 19, 1943. He was editor of
Blackfriars and Prior of London during the years 1955-58 and contributed regularly to the
London Times Literary Supplement and other periodicals.
In the early 1950s he did
a great deal of preaching both on the radio and through Mission work. It was due to
his interest in preaching and writing, and to the historical bond that has grown between
the Province of England and our own province, that Fr. Illtud journeyed to
California. His preaching skills were readily apparent and he was in great demand
for Diocesan and Religious retreats.
On June 18, 1966 the Master General assigned him to this province. He served as
master of the Student Fathers and editor of Season for several years. His influence
allowed the latter publication to be associated with Our Sunday Visitor for several
years. A serious decline in health caused him to return to England in 1970. He
manifested a strong desire to return to this province, but his health prevented this
step. He died in Greece on July 22, 1972 while on a special mission for the
Church. His contributions, warmth, and talents will long be remembered by this
province whose name he enhanced by his presence and work.
