Fr.
Luke Andrew Kelly, OP
Luke Andrew Kelly was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 2, 1922. His early
schooling all took place in that city and he entered the regular seminary courses at
Quigley preparatory school in 1940. He then passed to Mundelein seminary and St.
Louis University and was ordained in Springfield, Illinois for that diocese on March 28,
1948. He returned for several years of further study in the field of education at
the University of St. Louis. Shortly after this he moved to the West Coast and was
received by Fr. Fulton as a Third Order member on August 4, 1959.
During his early years
in the Order he served as caretaker and procurator for Healdsburg, Thousand Oaks, and St. Alberts College. He spent a number of
years working with the Fathers on the Mission Band as well as serving as Chaplain at the
Dominican Hospitals in Merced and Hanford, California. Much of his preaching work
centered around Our Lady of Mercy parish in Merced where he was well loved by the people
of that area. His warm heart, great sense of humor, and continual hard work won the
admiration of all.
On August 4, 1971, Fr. Scanlon received his solemn vows at St. Peter Martyr Priory in
Los Angeles. He became sick while working in the parish at Hilmar, California and
died while reciting the Rosary with a Dominican Sister at Mercy Hospital in Merced.
He died on August 26, 1972 and is buried at St. Dominics cemetery, Benicia,
California. |
