Br. Frederick Narberes, O.P.

William Narberes, 81, a Dominican Friar of the Western Dominican Province, died on January 16, 2019. He was born April 30, 1937 in Martinez, California to Catherine (Lane) and Rene Narberes. William entered the Dominican Order Western Province and was professed a Cooperator Brother receiving the name Frederick on May 20, 1961. Over the 57 years as a Religious Brother in the western United States, Brother Frederick served in the following places: San Francisco: Provincial Secretary; Los Angeles: Daniel Murphy High School, Teacher-Counselor-Principal also working on Masters and Doctorate in Education; Oakland: Formation Team Member for the Dominican Seminary at Saint Albert’s Priory.

In the Diocese of Phoenix he served in Tempe, Arizona at Catholic Charities, Family, Child and Marriage Counselor; in Phoenix he was Superintendent of Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools. He was secretary of education, William Bennett’s Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence serving as school evaluator. Served as a School Commissioner of Western Catholic Schools and Colleges as well as a School Evaluator for North Central Schools and Colleges. In Berkeley, California he was the Administrative Assistant to the President of the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology. Also in Berkeley California, he was Principal of the Madeleine Elementary School.

In Los Angeles California he was Administrator for Charter School grades 7-12, for Gang Kids, Soledad Enrichment Action. On weekends he cooked and served meals for the homeless in West Hollywood. In Eagle Rock, California he worked at Saint Dominic’s Parish as Director of Religious Education and as Principal of Saint Dominic’s Elementary School. Moving to Las Vegas, Nevada he was the Deputy Director of Residential Services for the Diocese of Las Vegas, Catholic Charities.

Continuing to use his educational background with an MSW in Counseling he became an assistant to the Director of the Saint Therese Center HIV/AIDS Outreach as a Case Manager. Having been diagnosed with a terminal illness he shortened his hours and helped out at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas (UNLV) as assistant to the Director of the Saint Thomas Aquinas Newman Center.

He is preceded in death by his parents Catherine and Rene Narberes; Brothers James and Paul Narberes and Sister in law: Karen Narberes. He is survived by his sister Kathleen (Narberes) Hieb and her husband Douglass Heib. Nieces and Nephews: Gerald Hieb and wife Suzie Hieb; Richard Hieb and his wife Tammie Hieb; Gary Narberes and his wife Jenifer Narberes, as well as his Dominican Brothers who are members of the Province of the Holy Name of Jesus in the Western Dominican Province.

Funeral Services will be held in Las Vegas at Guardian Angel Cathedral (336 Cathedral Way, Las Vegas Nevada 89109) on Tuesday January 22nd, with Viewing at 9:00 AM followed by Mass at 10:00 AM.

Prayer and Funeral Services will also be held in Benicia, California at Saint Dominic’s Church (475 East I Street, Benicia, California 94510).

  • Evening Prayer Vigil on Thursday Evening, January 24th at 7:00 PM.
  • A Funeral Mass on Friday January 25th at 11:00 AM
  • Burial immediately following Mass at Saint Dominic’s Cemetery (585 Hillcrest Avenue, Benicia, CA)
