The Dominican Black & White
Celebrating 175 Years in the West
We are excited to announce The Dominican Black & White — a festive evening of dinner and dancing benefiting St. Dominic’s Priory and our growing novitiate. Come honor our 175-year history and celebrate the future of the Dominicans in the West!
As we pay homage to the people who set in motion the Western Dominican Province, we'll also have the opportunity to thank those who have kept the momentum going today with the presentation of the Alemany Award — named after one of our founders and given to those who have shown exemplary Christian service in helping advance the Dominican mission in the West.
Our guest speaker for the evening is Fr. Robert Spitzer, S.J., a long-time friend of the friars. His work evangelizing the culture via his award-winning books, leading and teaching at esteemed universities, and numerous media appearances embodies the spirit of Saint Dominic to preach boldly the truth of the Gospel.
We hope you'll join us in celebrating this special occasion.
In 1850, Pope Pius IX sent the Dominicans to California at the height of the Gold Rush with a clear mission: “Where others are drawn by gold, you must carry the cross.” From the Gold Rush to the Tech Boom, the Western Dominican Friars have continued to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ to a world that seeks after riches but has become spiritually poor. This work is no less vital than it was 175 years ago.
